1,500 babies at work and many more to come!
The babies-at-work movement has expanded dramatically since I founded the Parenting in the Workplace Institute two years ago. We have gone from a database of 70 confirmed baby-friendly organizations to nearly 130, with dozens more still to be confirmed and more companies working on new formal babies-at-work policies. More than 1,500 babies have successfully come to work with their parents, in more than 35 states and a wide range of company types and sizes.
The Institute’s work has been discussed in dozens of national and international media pieces, including the New York Times, Time Magazine, People Magazine, USA Today, the Wall Street Journal, Redbook, the Fox Business Network, the Today Show, numerous U.S. and Canadian radio programs including Morning Edition on NPR, Ireland Public Radio, BBC Radio, and articles in Germany, Australia, Hungary, Denmark, the United Kingdom, Ireland, South Africa, Taiwan, and Canada, among others. We have scientists at major universities, including Harvard and Brandeis, who are eager to coordinate formal studies on parenting in the workplace for us. The National Institutes of Health and other organizations have expressed interest in funding studies. We have worked with a broker to create a liability insurance policy to enable major expansion of this concept. We are being asked to speak at conferences and federal government programs (such as The Business Case for Breastfeeding) are promoting our work. Due to a family situation, I was able to do very little with the Institute in 2009—and still this movement continued to grow. We're still receiving (unsolicited) media coverage, more and more companies are starting babies-at-work programs, and acceptance of this concept in our society has increased significantly.Throughout the Institute's history, I had to work full time as a legal secretary and do Institute work only on the side. However, as of March 1st, I will be devoting myself completely to this work. I am determined to do whatever it takes to show our world how parenting in the workplace revolutionizes the lives of families, transforms the workplace, and provides us with the supportive “village” model of raising children that we had lost for so long.I believe that the next steps are to provide those of us who already support parenting in the workplace with a community and a platform of our own and to make the Institute self-sufficient, so as to enable me (and others in the future) to actually focus on growing this movement. We are taking a number of actions in the next several months:
1. We now offer memberships in the Parenting in the Workplace Institute. We are in the process of starting an online (and eventually print) newsletter to show the tremendous growth of this movement and to provide inspiration and resources. Membership will be $25 per year. In return, you will receive a membership card, access to the Parenting in the Workplace forum, and 12 issues of our monthly e-newsletter, PIWI Perspectives (the first issue will come out in May). Members will also be entitled to one hour of personal consultation on anything related to babies-at-work programs. The newsletter will contain the latest news on the growth of this movement, the Institute's current efforts and plans for expanding our work, company and parent features, useful product reviews for parents, pictures of babies at work, and numerous other features.
2. Starting March 1st, I will be reconnecting with all known baby-friendly companies (which number close to 170, including those we have not yet obtained permission to list) and obtaining updated information and details for use in enabling new companies to start programs.
3. We plan to create a certification and corporate membership structure to enable companies to maximize the benefits and social impact of their babies-at-work programs.
We have many other plans for long-term growth, which are contained in a comprehensive partnership proposal that we are happy to share upon request. Right now, however, our focus is on building our membership roster so as to effectively develop a community around this movement and to provide income to bring us toward sustainability.
The supportive community that develops in every baby-friendly company emphasizes the potential of the parenting-at-work movement. We will show the world that it is possible to have it all—time with our families, a fulfilling career, and financial stability—we just can't do it alone. We who understand the power of parenting in the workplace are at a unique point in history; we stand at the edge of a grand shift in the very structure of our society. We are the ones who can make this change happen, eventually on a worldwide scale—but only if we work together.
Help us to make parenting in the workplace the way of the world. To join our movement to bring new life to the workplace, please become a member of PIWI.
